City Sports Complex to build $395,000 restroom

The city also approving the construction of a new restroom building at the Texas Bank Sports Complex. The project originally went to city council months ago requesting a bid for over $800,000. However, that bid was denied now our Brenda Matute, has the latest.

The city approved the building of a new restroom facility here for a total cost of $395,000.

Which according to the construction manager is well under budget.

"It’s a cinder block building, a majority of the work is all plumbing work which is an expensive trade,” said City Manager David Knapp.

The San Angelo Recreation Department hosts several softball and baseball competitions throughout the year, in some cases allowing for as many as 115 teams to participate in a tournament.

"When you have that many teams that are travelling from out of town that are renting hotels and eating out and spending money in town; that definitely has an impact,” said Knapp. “Not all the locals have to pay the taxes but they can come in pay the taxes and help out.”

However, the need for a bathroom near the Twin Mountain Dentistry field has caused the city to miss out on opportunities to host some of these "out of towners”.

"People don’t like to come because we don’t have any restrooms it kind of turns them a little bit, but now we can say we have all the facilities and everyone will be happy," said Knapp.

He says the cost for the new restroom is due in large part to the distance the underground utilities will have to run.

"Running utilities to the exact location electrical and water, the sewer lines are already there but we have to bring all these utilities a long way," said Knapp.

The new restroom will provide 5 stalls for the women’s bathroom and 5 stalls for the men’s.

"It’s got to be built to be indestructible, which we don’t do that at our homes,” said Knapp.

The construction manager says work on the new restroom could begin within the next 30 days and take about 135 days to complete.
