Concho Valley beekeepers on National Pollinator Week

From June 18th to June 24th it's National Pollinator Week. We use this as a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word on what you can to protect bugs that are more important to daily life than you may think. Our Brenda Matute has more.

SAN ANGELO, TX — Plants, garden vegetables and fruit trees were once just a flower in need of pollination.

"78 percent or better of the fruits and vegetable we see in the store wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for the pollinators," said
Bryan Swecker VP of the Concho Valley Beekeeper’s Association.

Until bees, butterflies, and many more bugs came around to spread seeds and gather pollen.

"They help fertilize, if that didn't happen we wouldn’t have our fruit," said Swecker.

Pollinators will land on a flower, suck up nectar, carry pollen in their legs and fly flower to flower making deposits.

He adds to anyone who may find a swarm of bees in their back yard: don't mess with them and don't attempt to kill them.

"If you don’t have the equipment if you don’t know what you’re doing let them be," said Swecker.

Swarms are usually parts of a colony that have left with the old queen and moved on looking for a new home.

if they haven't left after about 72 hours Swecker says to have them removed you can check the Texas Apiary Inspection Service bee removal services list on the Concho Valley Beekeeper’s Association Facebook page.
