How to keep your kids cool during summer activities

Summer football camp, band practice and other activities are just around the corner. With the triple-digit heat upon us health experts say injury prevention is always the best.

ABILENE, TX — Summer football camp, band practice and other activities are just around the corner. With the triple-digit heat upon us health experts say injury prevention is always the best.

"It's extremely hot and having 2-day having band practice, school activities starting to catch up with us already,” Lacy Mildord, a registered nurse at Hendrick Medical Center, described the rest of the summer.

Injury prevention is key to stop a trip to the doctors from happening.

"[Drink] 8, 8-ounce glasses of water per day,” Milford said. “But you want to take into consideration that if you're going to be out in the heat that you need to over hydrate yourself.”

Plenty of sleep is also key, teens should be getting about 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

"Be mindful that if you're in the heat to keep you caffeinated beverages, sugary beverages, at a minimum,” Milford said. “That can speed up the dehydration process."

The Center for Disease reports there are different signs as to what to look for and what to do when it comes to heat-related illnesses. But keep this tip in mind:

"If they have been out in the heat and they have confusion and they're not sweating,” Milford said. “Call 911."
