Farm Bill Explained

The House of Representatives passed their version of the Farm Bill by just two votes. Those opposed are saying some of the requirements are controversial.

SAN ANGELO, TX — Those new requirement making people who are enrolled in the supplemental nutrition program or “SNAP” to work 20 hours per week and enroll in job training or be cut off from receiving the benefits.

According to the Department of Agriculture 42 million Americans participated in the snap program last year.

The Senate is expected to vote on their version of the Farm Bill soon. Their version will not include the same work requirements.

Other topics addressed in the Farm Bill include a safety net providing risk coverage and price loss coverage for the next 5 years and protection of crop insurance.

It also helps cut red tape and reforms when it comes to regulations for farm production.

It will invest in rural broadband and establish scholarships for future farmers and ranchers.

It also provides money to food banks and farm to food bank, or Ag surplus, programs.
