Trave Tips from the Texas Department of Public Safety

According to the National Safety Council an estimated 433 people may be killed while on the road over the long holiday weekend. They also say almost 49, 400 may be seriously injured due to a car wreck.

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety has some tips on how you can keep your family and yourself safe this holiday season.

"It's the busiest day of the year, sadly it's also associated with the deadliest day of the year.

When we look at the behaviors that are normally associated with crashes or death it's 1, speed. Going at a high rate of speed. Driving aggressively is what speed really is. 2, impaired drivers. Then 3, is distracted drivers. Those are the three main factors when we talk about crashes on Texas and U.S. highways.

We really want you to reduce your speed, plan ahead, give yourself enough time to get there, change the way your driving habits in inclement weather and just drive friendly. Avoid all distractions of any time, whether it's reaching for things in the vehicle or just being on that mobile device.

We'd like to think this is all preventable and when we get out there and drive we really want you to be doing just that. Just driving only. Knowing that it's your life and other's lives depending on you to do the right thing and just driving,” Sgt. Justin Baker said.

Another reminder, get plenty of sleep. Driving when you're sleep deprived can be compared to driving drunk.
