San Angelo mother and 3-year-old toddler find used needles in Santa Rita area park

One parent is warning the community after stumbling across used needles in a park near the Santa Rita area. Our Brenda Matute is sharing this mothers experience and how it's a problem more common than people might think.

SAN ANGELO, TX — Just a normal walk through the park for Davida Stewart and her toddler.

"We were walking from my house on South Monroe and it’s about a block and a half away, on our way here to trade out books from the little take a book box,” said Stewart.

Until something caught her eye.

"And my daughter caught my attention because she said mommy look and she got really excited,” she said. “She went to bend down and I saw the orange from far away and I went into a panic."

A used needle laying in the grass for anyone to access.

"It made me panic cause she's 3, we're on our way back and I decide to go farther out and cross over and we came across 2 others," said Stewart.

Davida says she walks through the Santa Rita park about once a week because its near her home and away from traffic, but finding used syringes is upsetting.

"It’s by an elementary my kids are small there’s lots of kids in this neighborhood I would hate to think that some little kid would prick themselves," said Stewart.

She says her daughter was lucky enough to avoid being pierced.

"We don’t touch anything especially if we don’t know what it is it’s better to just ask me," said Stewart.

But it’s a problem that may not being going away soon.

"I don’t really think it’s the neighborhood I think it can happen anywhere I just think it’s a problem here in San Angelo really," she said. “Now since I’ve posted on the Nextdoor app I see that a lot of our neighbors have had the same kind of problems and its even scarier cause I’m thinking we've just had a blind eye to it."

Davida says she has reported the needles to local police now she just hopes parents will be more conscious of the dangers around them.

“I didn’t think it would be this close to home and I guess that’s what hurts the most is that it’s close to where my kids play its close to where we live," said Stewart.
