ABILENE, Texas — The nonprofit organization, Big Country Purse Project, has helped women from all walks of life - with the gift of a purse.
Founder Jessica StJohn-Floyd collects purses and fills them up with feminine hygiene products, makeup and everything else that might help a woman in a time of need.
"In 2015, I delivered my fourth child and due to medical issues, I ended up having a hysterectomy and so I no longer needed feminine products and if you've ever purchased them, you know they are quite expensive,” StJohn-Floyd said.
That’s how the project came to life.
“Whether you've fled from domestic violence or you've stepped out of prison, or out of a recovery program, or you know you've lost everything in a fire, that's like this one thing that’s yours,” StJohn-Floyd said.
Over the years, her family and friends have helped her with donations.
StJohn-Floyd’s purses have traveled as far as Houston when donated to Hurricane Harvey victims through the Salvation Army.
