SAN ANGELO, Texas — From traffic injuries, poisoning, burnings, falls and water drownings, Safe Kids San Angelo works with families in the community to keep children safe from childhood injuries.

According to Safe Kids San Angelo, preventable injuries are the number one killer of children in the United States. Safe Kids works in the community to provide information and education on how they can continue to keep adolescents safe.

The organization is hosting a Summer Safety Event from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, in the Shannon South covered parking lot, 3501 Knickerbocker Road.

The goal of the event is to educate parents on ways to keep children safe throughout the summer.

Free life jackets and complementary fittings will be available while supplies last.

"We want to educate folks about water safety overall. But, also provide the life jacket that you see behind me. You know, it's important to educate but to give them something that can potentially save their lives is very important to us," Jamie Harden, Safe Kids San Angelo coordinator, said.

TxDOT and the Texas Department of Public Safety will be at the event to talk about heat safety.

"A lot of people don't realize how quickly a vehicle can heat up in the summer. So, they will be demonstrating how hot a car can get and just the importance of never leaving your children unattended in a vehicle. Especially in the summer," Harden said.

Brent Casey, City of San Angelo's recreational manager, said it is vital to have a life vest around any body of water.

"Save a life. A life vest for any water. All water is dangerous. So, any proper protection that you can have no matter how deep it is. Rather it is the lake it pools or whatever it may be. You need to have the proper safety equipment and abide by all of the rules of the water," Casey said.

The San Angelo Fire Department will also be present to demonstrate hands-only CPR and to talk about general safety tips if one is involved in an emergency over the summer.
