Ozona chosen for documentary on burn training and conservation education

West Texans had the opportunity to learn about the many benefits of prescribed fire.

OZONA, Texas — Wild Spirit Wild Places partnered with the Ozona Chamber Of Commerce for a burn training and conservation education documentary in Ozona.

About 65 acres on the Baggett Ranch in Ozona underwent a prescribed burn to maintain and improve grassland ecosystems.

“Prescribed fire, which is what we really focused on, is really an elemental part, a fundamental part of healthy range ecosystems that makes everything safer and healthier,” Ozona Chamber of Commerce President Philip Walker said. 

Wild Spirit Wild Places said during the two-day event, approximately 150 participants completed prescribed burn training sessions and attended seminars conducted by more than 15 professionals and respected instructors in various conservation fields. 

Local residents, landowners and visitors from around the state were able to learn about responsible land stewardship and the many benefits of prescribed fire. 

“Prescribed fire, which is what we really focused on, is really an elemental part, a fundamental part of healthy range ecosystems that makes everything safer and healthier prescribed fires are extremely important for maintaining healthy, healthy land The Native Americans have used prescribed fires for for centuries. It basically controls invasive growth. It controls excess grass and brush and debris on the ground.’ Walker continued.
