Nine businesses receive historical awards

A few of San Angelo’s local businesses are receiving recognition for over 50 years of business in Tom Green County.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — In a regular meeting of the Tom Green Count Commissioners Court, officials announced that nine San Angelo businesses have received the Texas Treasure Business Award and the Tom Green County Heritage Award, part of the county’s 150-year anniversary.

To win the award, a business must have been open for at least 50 years and must be locally owned, not part of a large chain.

The nine businesses include Robert Massie Funeral Home, Birk Monumental Manufacturing, Reece Albert, Dix Key Shop, Olive Nursery, Cole’s Army Surplus, Randall Motors, Concho Carpet One Floor and Home and Busker’s Body Shop.

Two of the winners and owners of Robert Massie Funeral Home said the award means recognition for their years of service to the community.

“I think that having a family-owned funeral home that’s been around since 1906 is a very important thing in our community that shows that we have dignity and respect for the people of our community," Rusty Tapp said.

Tapp's wife, Michelle, also said there are benefits to using a local business.

"It’s a local business so, when you use a local business, the money stays in the community," she said.

The nine businesses will receive the awards at a reception on Dec. 3 in Stephens Central Library's Sugg Community Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
