SONORA, Texas — One man is dead and two other men were injured after a driver fled from an attempted traffic stop early Thursday morning in Sonora.
A preliminary crash investigation report from the Texas Department of Public Safety stated a Sonora Police Department officer tried to stop a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu for a traffic violation in the city of Sonora.
The driver, identified as Stephen Alexander Hernandez, 17, of Spring, failed to stop and drove away from the officer. Hernandez then turned his lights off and continued eastbound on FM 3130 at a high rate of speed, exceeding 100 mph, the report stated.
While entering a curve in the road, Hernandez lost control of the vehicle and entered the westbound barrow ditch and drove through a fence. The car hit multiple trees and overturned, ejecting two of the three passengers. One of the ejected passengers, Noe Rolando Hernandez-Lopez, died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash.
The report states Hernandez-Lopez and two other passengers of the car were undocumented non-citizens. The two additional passengers were transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
