Central HS girls basketball player Layla Young reaches 1k point club

Young has over 1,000 points in her high school career and she is not finished yet.

For Central High School girls basketball shooting forward Layla Young, playing the game of basketball was not always her first choice. Young originally chose to play soccer but it wasn't until fifth grade when she realized her love for hooping.

As Young got older she began honing her basketball skills, which helped her become more familiar with the game. Now as a senior in high school, Young has officially scored over 1,000 points and she's not done yet.

"It's been a crazy experience like I never thought I would hit a thousand. Over the years we've really come together as a team. The experience has been great, I'm really glad I spent my four years here at Central," Young said.

As a freshman, Young received honors being named second-team all-district. During her sophomore year, she was named first-team all-district and All-West Texas. Although Young's high school basketball career is coming to an end, she plans to continue building her accolades.

"I hope to get MVP again and I hope that our team gets past round two of the playoffs. I think we have a really great team and these are the most athletic girls I get to play with," Young said.

The Central girls basketball team is heading into postseason play after an 18-11 regular season.

Jordan Sarten, head coach of the girls' basketball team says Young's presence has made a huge impact on her team.

"I think Layla is just a huge dominant presence for us as a player. She's a great leader. Her having such success last year with her accolades during district, I think it gave her a bigger presence for us and it helped a lot of the younger kids look up to her. She works super hard she can play defense and she can play on the inside and outside she's just a key role for us," Sarten said.

The Lady Bobcats will begin their playoff action when they tip-off against Pebble Hills at 6 p.m. Monday.
