SAN ANGELO, Texas — Several San Angelo museums will offer free admission and special programs to celebrate National Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 18. The event is sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine to note contributions made by the nation’s museums and cultural institutions.
San Angelo museum locations and hours are:
- Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, 630 S Oakes St: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Mayer Museum, 2501 W. Avenue N (Angelo State campus): 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- San Angelo Nature Center, 7409 Knickerbocker Road: noon to 5 p.m.
- Railway Museum of San Angelo, 703 S. Chadbourne St.: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fort Concho will have a special demonstration of sewing, talks on the roles of women in the late 19th century, plus specially assigned guides in several of the historic buildings.
The recently-opened Mayer Museum on the Angelo State University campus will have special games and scavenger hunts for children.
The Nature Center will offer a dinosaur/animal color craft kit available on-site or for pickup, while supplies last.
The Railway Museum will feature living history tours led by appropriately-dressed conductors, engineers and dispatchers.
Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum will not be open that day. but will reopen later in the month for tours.
The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will also be closed, but will be open Sept. 24 for its next exhibit opening and Fiestas Patrias celebration.
