CHRISTOVAL, Texas — Country music star Aaron Watson, known for his hit songs such as "San Angelo", "Barbed Wire Halo" and "Reckless", is canceling shows for the next few weeks, because of issues with his vocal cords.
In a video on social media to his fans, Watson explained the ongoing problem that caused him to cancel tour dates. He said this is the first time in his career he's had to cancel shows because of health reasons.
"Before my Billy Bob's show a few weeks back, I was really struggling singing," Watson said in the video. "The following week, I was in some excruciating pain."
Watson said he saw a doctor who told him to take time off because of inflammation of his vocal cords, so he did just that.
"And, I played that next Tuesday, at Arkansas FFA. And my throat felt better, so I was feeling good about that," he said.
But a few days later, at a sold-out show in Denver, Watson said his voice seized up on him and he felt as if he were swallowing glass. He said he could not hit any high notes. Watson canceled an April 30 show in his hometown of Borger, then saw a specialist in Dallas the following Monday.
He said he will not require surgery, "just a little time off."
"I hate to bear the bad news, but I won't be playing my shows in Buda or Christoval this week," Watson said.
Out-of-state shows the following weeks including Colorado, Montana and Utah. Watson said his team will do its best to reschedule canceled dates.
Adding light to his announcement, Watson smiled and said, "The other thing that the doctor told me to do, which is really going to be a struggle, is he told me that, I can't yell at my kids."
Cooper's in Christoval said the tickets already purchased for this weekend will be honored on the new date, which has been confirmed as Sept. 16.
The Dos Borrachos show featuring Roger Creager and Kevin Fowler will go on as planned Friday.
