ABILENE, Texas — The capybara is the largest species of rodent in the world, growing up to 170 pounds in adulthood.
Wednesday morning, the Abilene Zoo welcomed a litter of five baby capybaras, born on exhibit.
In September 2021, mother Daisy gave birth to her first litter of nine, making this her second litter in less than a year.
She was pregnant for five to six months and her babies weighed roughly three to four pounds at birth.
"This year we have welcomed so many new members to our family," Clay Carabajal, Supervisor of Conservation at the zoo, said. "This shows that the animals of the Abilene Zoo are healthy and thriving."
Carabajal also said multiple generations of visitors can visit the zoo and feel inspired by the wildlife.
The capybara pups are currently on exhibit in the South America section of the zoo.
