After 24 years, Tom Early is retiring as president of the San Angelo Health Foundation

During Early's tenure, the Foundation granted more than $56 million to organizations in the Concho Valley.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tom Early has been serving as president of the San Angelo Health Foundation for more than 24 years. During his tenure, the Foundation has granted more than $56 million to 217 organizations in the Concho Valley.

"You name it: any type of project, nonprofit, charity...we've been involved in it one way or another," Early said.

The San Angelo Health Foundation's mission is to enhance the quality of life for the people of the San Angelo area. The foundation supports and provides grants for various community projects, non-profits, charities, and activities.

"The nonprofits in this community make up 12% of our workforce, and they're very integral to the quality of life in San Angelo. Whether it's youth activities, adult activities, health, education, arts, culture… it's very important that people realize that nonprofits are such an integral part of a healthy community," Early said,

Early helped start the San Angelo Health Foundation back in 1996. His first grant went to Angelo State University to create its college of physical therapy. He also helped develop the Kids Kingdom playground and the building of the San Angelo Visitor's Center.

"Whether it's the library, performing arts center, "the Y", you name it...we've been involved in all of those activities," he said.

Early's retirement vacation plans have been put on hold because of COVID-19, but after years of helping build a community, it's not too bad to relax and enjoy the view.

"It's fun to look around and, no matter where you are in the community, know we've played a role in trying to help our fellow citizens. That's something I'm really proud of."

Deborah Watson, who has been working with Early for the past five years, will be taking his position on July 1, 2020.
