OZONA, Texas — Ozona Elementary School is having issues with bats on it campus, a problem stemming from the winged mammals' arrival in February.
To try to resolve the problem, Raul Chavarria, Crockett County Consolidated Common School District Superintendent, said he hired Austin-based Town Lake Construction. The company specializes in bat removal. They've been working to seal the building, as well as add exclusion traps, since Monday, so the bats will not have a way to re-enter.
Tom Regner, Town Lake Construction owner, said that it is common for bats to be in the area, and that the stop in Ozona is just a part of their migration.
“So, this is really common, we are getting three calls a day to do a school,” Regnar said.
Teachers are educating the young students to leave the bats alone and the district has informed parents of the situation.
“We educated the kids, we sent a pamphlet to all the teachers to read to their kids that way they are all getting the same information and covering the same information,” Chavarria said.
School officials said their objective is to be bat-free soon and have already noticed a decrease in the number of bats on campus since the removal process began.
