GREENSBORO, N.C. — We observed Veterans Day on November 11 each year. It’s a day to recognize all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Because of their service, we live safely in our country and have the freedom we do.
One thing that people may not realize is that Veterans Day honors and appreciates all who served in the military in wartime and peace, whether they died in battle or not. Additionally, Veterans Days was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, to acknowledge the end of WWI.
If you want to approach a veteran to thank them for their service, look at their body language for clues. Open body language such as looking at you, relaxation in their face and muscles, and giving space for you to get closer are good signs that they’re approachable.
For veterans, an acknowledgment for their service to our country and safety is appreciated, particularly those who went to Vietnam. Military members who returned from Vietnam didn’t get a warm reception, and having people acknowledge their service now can help heal past wounds. Although you might be curious about their experiences, some veterans may not be open to talking about it. Some may prefer to keep what they went through, witnessed, and experienced to themselves.
