SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark will host a living history day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 6 at the Officers' Quarters 6.
According to a City of San Angelo press release, staff and living history volunteers will be baking bread and other food from the cookbook of Alice Grierson, wife of Benjamin Grierson, commander of the post and 10th Calvary in the 1870s.
Another volunteer will demonstrate the multiple layers of women's clothing during that time. There will be music played on a piano, a staple of families during this era.
The program marks Women's History Month when many organizations focus on the heritage, achievements and stories of women throughout the country.
“At Fort Concho, the roles of females extended to wives and daughters of the officers, laundresses and hospital matrons, and the wives and families of civilian contractors,” site education coordinator, Sarah Ross said. “Much of what we know about daily life at Fort Concho comes from Alice Grierson through her many letters now being transcribed in the fort archives."
Alice Grierson's cookbook was published along with other letters from her husband in the book entitled, 'The Colonel's Lady on the Western Frontier.'
