COLUMBIA, S.C. — Just like humans, animals are sensitive to sounds and rhythms. Playing background noise can create a soothing environment and help reduce stress, anxiety, and even loneliness.
"Classical music helps calm down dogs, in particular," said Libba Ulery with Pawmetto Lifeline. "Many kinds of quiet music are great to play in a shelter environment, as well as at home.”
Studies have shown that soft melodies with a slower tempo are generally well-received. A softly playing TV or radio can also provide comfort.
"They hear humans, so they don’t feel like they’ve been deserted,” Ulery said.
Background noises can be beneficial to your pet, even when you are at home. Thunderstorms, fireworks, and other loud sounds can be scary. During these stressful events, playing soothing noises can help drown out the frightening sounds and keep your furry friend more at ease.
Let's not forget about all of the dogs and cats awaiting forever homes. Pawmetto Lifeline has embraced this idea, too, playing music to make the animals' stay a bit more comfortable.
