UPDATE: Abilene FD reports Sunday morning's fire has been extinguished

UPDATE: Fire crews will remain on the scene throughout the day.

ABILENE, Texas — Update (4 p.m. Feb. 7):  According to an Abilene Fire Department Facebook post, Sunday's fire at the Briarwood Apartments has been extinguished,  however, crews will remain on the scene for the remainder of the day.

The Red Cross is helping evacuated residents with housing and other essentials.

AEP, ATMOS, Abilene Police Department, MetroCare Ambulance, City of Abilene Water Utility, Animal Services, and Street departments assisted the Abilene Fire Department.

The Abilene Fire Department responded to a structure fire at approximately 6:19 a.m. Sunday at the Briarwood Apartments, 3200 block of 3rd Street.

According to an AFD Facebook post, crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from multiple units.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm and then a third alarm. 

Crews were forced to make defensive, exterior attack, according to the post.

The AFD said no fatalities have been reported. A suspect is in custody and will be charged with arson, the post said.

Currently, 21 units are affected by the fire and the Red Cross is assisting the residents.
