SONORA, Texas — Sonora felt freezing temperatures and light flurries Thursday morning. Sonora Police Department Chief Art Fuentes said the best thing you can do to prepare for severe weather conditions like this is to plan ahead, especially if you plan on driving.
“Any time you travel it’s always important that you plan your route out right and so there’s plenty of websites out there that you can visit, look and see what road conditions are. TXDOT is a really good example, you can go on the website and see how the weather is and road conditions, it’s really important that you pre-plan your trip,” Fuentes said.
He said the most important thing when it comes to preparing to hit the road during winter weather conditions is to make sure you are prepared for a worst-case scenario. Packing essentials is crucial, Fuentes says a lot of times, basic necessities are overlooked.
“You have to make sure that you have plenty of your everyday deal, plenty of clothing, plenty of water in your vehicles, it’s always important to plan your trip before you head out,” Fuentes said.
In a worst-case scenario, Fuentes said it’s crucial to be safe on the road, especially at night. He suggested being visible so other drivers can see you.
“Once you pull over and you're on the side of the road you have to be visible, have a reflective vest of some sort, bright colored t-shirt of whatever it might be, flashers on your car to make sure people can see you,” Fuentes said.
Fuentes said planning ahead is key for driving under severe weather conditions.
