Salvation Army prepares to help those affected by Hurricane Ian disaster

San Angelo's Salvation Army prepares to help in the relief effort for those affected by Hurricane Ian.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Hurricane Ian left destruction in several parts of Florida, leaving many without power, food and other belongings. Since it made landfall, organizations such as the Salvation Army have been quick to jump in and help.

“What a big part is for us is to go down and essentially try to provide, you know, if medical relief is necessary, we're kind of we're not there like as paramedics or anything like that. But we're there is a support system,” Salvation Army of San Angelo Community Relations and Development Coordinator, Alex Holguin, said.

Salvation Army units have been sent to Florida, including the emergency disaster services team from Texas and six mobile feeding units.

“Typically, what will happen is they'll be there for about two weeks and then if we're still needed at that point, another team will rotate in and kind of take over just to provide you know relief and aid wherever it's needed,” Holguin said.

He said in a scenario such as this when things get worse, auxiliary teams such as the San Angelo Salvation Army will be called in to assist. He said they are always on call in case help is needed. Although the Lone Star State is more than a thousand miles away, people in West Texas can pitch in.

“One-hundred percent of anything donated for relief goes back into relief. There's no administrative fees on that. So, yeah, anything in the Concho Valley that is donated in regards to Hurricane Ian will go back into either relief, whether it be financial relief for the people who survived down there or, you know, paying for food, water, whatever people down there need," Holguin said.
