VERIBEST, Texas — UPDATE: Veribest ISD Proposition A passed by a very slim margin of 90 votes for and 88 votes against.
ORGINAL STORY:
The Veribest Independent School District is asking community members for their votes in a bond election Saturday. The bond is two phases, one for renovation and one for construction.
A group of community members formed a committee and conducted a needs assessment over the facilities. They then took the recommendations to the board. At that point, the board made a motion to call a bond for $15.5 million.
The proposed project for Veribest is divided into two parts, the initial phase is the construction of the elementary school. The second phase is renovations and additions to the secondary campus and removal of portable classroom buildings.
“Whenever the weather drops extremely cold we have pipes freeze and constant plumbing issues,” Veribest ISD Superintendent Mandy Traylor said.
Severe weather has been one of the main causes for property damage at the school, one of the phases included in the bond is the removal of portable classroom buildings.
“They are just not in very good shape, they deteriorate rapidly and so we planned phase two to take place of those portables and add additional junior high, high school classrooms and to remove those out,” Traylor said.
Veribest Elementary School Principal Amber Palmer explained how the bond, if passed, would affect resident’s taxes.
“For $100,000 residents it looks like your taxes will go up about $11 a month today, and spread over a year, that’s really not too crazy to ask for,” Palmer said.
Polls will open to eligible voters at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 7.
