Storms cause power outages for homes and businesses across San Angelo Monday

With more storms sure to come, San Angelo Emergency Management Coordinator urges citizens to have a plan in place.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Monday night, a strong storm system blew through San Angelo and other parts of West Texas, leaving many streets flooded, fallen power lines and damaged trees.

It damaged cars, homes and businesses, and left many people in the community without power for hours.

San Angelo Emergency Management Coordinator Jim Evans encourages the community to have a plan in place for storms such as this.

"The top of the line answer would be have a generator attached to their residence," Evans said. "A more realistic answer was having flashlights that are working with batteries and battery powered radio."

Evans continued to explain some plans people should have when it comes to homes with electric water heaters. He said to wait it out until the power comes back on, but if the power is out for a longer period of time, have gallons of water on hand.

"FEMA recommends a gallons a day per person in the residents," Evans said. "Have a key alternate cooking or heating source such as gas or a charcoal grill or something like that to use outdoors."

This will not be the last time a storm will come through San Angelo, or West Texas, for that matter. It is important for people to be prepared.

"Plan ahead and plan to plan not to have electricity at your place but make sure to have the water, have the flashlights and have the radios," Evans said.

Evans last piece of advice is during a power outage, do not call 9-1-1, instead call AEP Texas for updates.
