Abilene man arrested following a confrontation with a business owner

The man displayed a rifle in front of the business owner and then allegedly set the business on fire, according to the release.

ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Police officers arrested a 29-year-old Abilene man after displaying a rifle in front of a business owner and then reportedly set the business on fire.

According to an APD release, at 11:48 a.m. Sunday, May 16 the police and fire departments were called to the 4100 block of North First Street.

The initial investigation shows the business owner stated he was confronted at the business by an unknown man carrying a rifle. 

After a verbal exchange between the two, the suspect drove to the back of the business.

The business owner contacted the police. As police officers arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the business.

Fire crews arrived and put out the fire.

The suspect, identified as Pedro Mares, 29, was taken into custody. 

Mares is charged with second-degree felony arson and second-degree felony aggravated assault. Charges are pending for felon in possession of a firearm, according to the release.
