SAN ANGELO, Texas — The San Angelo Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division and San Angelo Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of a fire in a former grocery store location Friday morning.

According to the SAPD, just before 07:30 a.m., the SAPD and San Angelo Fire Department were dispatched to 1926 N. Bryant Blvd. for a structure fire. Officers saw flames and a large amount of smoke coming from the building.

After the fire was put out by the SAFD, officials were able to find a man inside the building. Officers made contact with him and learned he was armed with an edged weapon and had suicidal tendencies.

In a coordinated effort, SAPD Crisis Negotiation Team members communicated with the distraught man and ultimately came to a peaceful resolution.

The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office Mental Health Unit responded to the scene and took the man to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.

No officers or civilians were injured in the incident.
