She was named Phoenix by her rescuers and like a Phoenix, she is rising through the ashes as she heals from treatments at a San Antonio animal hospital.
It was on Feb. 7, Phoenix found her way onto a Nixon woman's front porch, crying in pain for help after someone set her on fire.
Phoenix's story has captivated so many in the community and touched many hearts.
"It's heartwarming to see people giving of themselves, and just their concern and care for Phoenix," said Ashley Book, Medical Director, 4 Little Paws Rescue.
Phoenix has lost 90% of her fur and her ears had to be amputated. A San Antonio rescue, 4 Little Paws, picked her up and is helping her get treatment at a local animal hospital.
Phoenix had her first surgery to remove burned skin earlier this week and is having a 2nd surgery next week.
"So the burnt skin needs to come off the lower portion of her back if it's ready, meaning it's on there right now to protect what new growth of tissue is trying to occur," said Book.
When she was initially brought in for treatment, her kidneys were a major concern as they tried to keep her body hydrated.
"Her kidney values are now within normal limits, and her electrolytes are stabilizing," said Book.
Phoenix's pain management has also been a concern because she has already been through so much, and the treatments are painful.
"She has a lot of wounds, like, abrasions and lacerations that were probably from whatever happened to her. Those are having to be sewn up as well," said Book
While Phoenix continues her recovery, her story has touched many and communities are rallying around her.
Nearly $15,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe account, and thousands more has come in through Facebook and to 4 Little Paws.
"I just want to thank them on behalf of myself, Phoenix and the rescue. We're eternally grateful for everything that everybody's given of themselves, and it's going to be put to good use," said Book.
There is also a call for justice for Phoenix from the Nixon Police Department and the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office.
KENS 5 spoke with a sergeant with Nixon Police, who says they are actively investigating this case.
There is also a reward, raised by good Samaritans to find whoever is responsible.
