Standoff in north San Angelo ends with suspect surrendering to law enforcement

The incident unfolded throughout Tuesday, beginning in the morning when the TGCSO deputies responded to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon call.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A standoff at a north San Angelo apartment building ended with a suspect surrendering to law enforcement officers. Tom Green County Sheriff's Office deputies, San Angelo Police and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the incident, which took place at The Enclave apartments on West 31st Street, just off North Chadbourne Street.

The incident unfolded throughout Tuesday, beginning in the morning when the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving a person being shot, TGC Sheriff Nick Hanna said.

There was also an aggravated kidnapping with three individuals involved, Hanna said.

"So what we had was one individual who had taken people at gunpoint. One of those individuals was shot, so our investigators tracked down our suspect here at the apartments, The Enclave, right off North Chadbourne, 3100 block," Hanna said. "We located the suspect inside, we knew that he was armed, we believe that he was armed....he was not coming out voluntarily and so because it was a danger to public safety, we set up a perimeter."

Hanna said the TGCSO's SRT (Special Response Team) responded and the department's hostage negotiator made contact with the suspect and was able to negotiate the suspect out of the apartment.

"So we're really happy that there was no one injured or killed in this situation," Hanna said about the standoff.

The sheriff had limited information on the condition of the person who was shot earlier in the day.

The man taken into custody was identified as Dwayne Andre Tatum Jr. of San Angelo.

A full press release will be issued by the sheriff's office later Tuesday, the sheriff said.
