SAN ANGELO, Texas — UPDATE (4:55 p.m. Sept. 27): A 15-year-old Lake View High School student was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center for the social media threats to the school Sept. 22.
The San Angelo Police Department said the student has been charged with terroristic threats and was identified after department detectives investigated the origin of the social media post.
The SAPD said it will continue to work with the San Angelo Independent School District to ensure the safety of students and encourage anyone with information regarding threats towards any school to contact the department directly so they can be addressed accordingly.
UPDATE: San Angelo PD Public Information Officer Richard Espinosa said officers were dispatched to the school Thursday morning in reference to threats made on social media about a possible school shooting.
Officers established a perimeter inside and outside Lake View. Texas Department of Public Safety and the Tom Green Sheriff's Office were at the scene to help the police department.
"We cleared the entire high school. We learned there was no immediate threat inside the school, therefore the staff began to release students inside the school to their parents outside," Espinoza said. "There are no injuries associated directly with the incident or the threats. There was no shooting whatsoever. We are currently investigating the incident."
Espinoza said more information will be released at a later time.
UPDATE: San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter issued the following statement on social media: "In reference to the call at Lakeview, police have been on scene investigating the origin of the threat. DPS & Tom Green County Sheriff Office arrived to assist as well. There were no shots fired at the school and no one has been injured."
ORIGINAL STORY: The San Angelo Police Department said there is an increased officer presence at San Angelo Lake View High School Thursday after a social media threat was made against the school.
The San Angelo Independent School District and Lake View High School were made aware of the threat Thursday morning and immediately began an investigation in conjunction with the SAPD. The investigation is ongoing and SAISD will continue to work directly with SAPD.
Thursday afternoon, the SAISD said the SAPD informed the district the investigation is making progress. SAPD continues to have an increased presence at the school.
Lake View High School has implemented a controlled release of students. Students remaining on campus will be in a supervised secured area through the end of the day.
SAISD said it will continue to provide updates to parents.
"We take all matters of this nature seriously and will follow procedures outlined in our Student Code of Conduct. The safety of our students is our first priority.
