UPDATE: Officer-involved shooting results in suspect death Friday

Law enforcement agencies gave more details Friday on an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect. An SAPD officer received minor injuries.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — An attempted traffic stop Friday by a Tom Green County Sheriff's Office deputy on a speeding vehicle just outside the San Angelo city limits led to a vehicle pursuit; and eventually the suspect vehicle colliding with a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper vehicle that was assisting in the pursuit.

San Angelo Police Department Public Information Officer Tracy Piatt-Fox, acting as a spokesperson for the agencies involved said following the collision at West Shiloh and North Monroe streets, the driver abandoned the vehicle in an alley, armed with a shotgun.

"Soon after, San Angelo Public Safety Communications received a call from a nearby resident stating they observed a man running with a shotgun," Piatt-Fox said. "And a second call from another resident who stated a man was in their backyard."

A sheriff's deputy and SAPD officers located the suspect in the backyard of the residence in the 700 block of North Madison Street, brandishing the shotgun.

"Gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was fatally wounded," Piatt-Fox said. "An SAPD officer received minor injuries from shotgun pellets. The injuries are not considered to be life-threatening."

Piatt-Fox said no DPS officers were injured in the incident. She said the vehicle was occupied by three other individuals, all of whom remained in the vehicle. Two of those occupants had outstanding warrants and were arrested at the scene.

Piatt-Fox said this is an ongoing investigation which will be conducted by the Texas Rangers. No further information was available for release at the time of the media briefing late Friday night. More information will be released when the investigation is complete.
