Day Nursery of Abilene expands its services with the help of Hendrick and HSU

The former College Heights Elementary will be turned into a new child care center by the end of this year.

ABILENE, Texas — The former College Heights Elementary school will soon be opening its doors back up as a child care center.

Through a collaborative partnership with Hendrick Health System and Hardin Simmons University, the Day Nursery of Abilene will be expanding their services at the former school.

"We have a huge waiting list, we're providing care for about 500 children every month and we have almost that many children in our waiting list,” Day Nursery president/CEO, Cynthia Pearson said.

A need for affordable child care that continues to grow that employers are filling the gap in.

"It was the employees of Hendrick over the last years that had said we'd like to have child care close to home,” Hendrick president/CEO, Brad Holland said.

Employees at HSU had the same concerns.

"In 2012, when Abilene ISD closed these doors, College Heights, Hendrick and its board of trustees and their leadership saw that the need to acquire this land and this building for a special purpose,” Holland said.

The renovations are in the works to open the facility by the end of the year.
