Day of Giving: Concho Valley Home for Girls

One nonprofit hope to bring awareness to more than what their title implies.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — If you drive down Preusser Street in San Angelo you'll see a sign for Concho Valley Home for Girls, a nonprofit that many believe only help young women and girls, but that's not the case.

“People who aren’t aware of what we do we receive these kids sometimes with just the clothes on their backs,” Tina Medrano Concho Valley Home for Girls Director said.

They do house girls - temporarily and permanently- that are in the foster care system or under the care of child protective services, but Medrano said they serve more than what their title implies.

“That really what we are trying to do get the word out that we assist boys as well,” Medrano said.

Medrano said they can’t change the name but they can change the perception by bringing awareness to all three services the nonprofit helps: The Children Emergency Shelter , Concho Valley Home for Girls, and the Transition Center.

“When they hear Concho Valley Home for girls they don’t want to return the call thinking they aren’t going to help me but we can help you,” Medrano said.

The programs including boys and girls who are former and current foster children that range in age from 14 to 26. Teaching each them life skills, money management, and things that they might not of had while they were in the system.
