SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University's fall 2020 enrollment set a new record for the second consecutive year with more than 10,700 students.
According to an ASU press release, there are 10,775 students currently enrolled for the fall 2020 semester, which beat the previous record of 10,586 students in 2019.
The release also said major factors such as the increase in ASU's undergraduate student retention rate has led to an increase in sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in classes.
The university's dual credit program also had a record-high number of enrollments. It increased to 3,423 students compared to 3,022 in fall 2019.
Approximately 50 campuses throughout West and Central Texas allow high students to earn both high school and ASU credit for courses taught at their schools.
In addition to the increased enrollment, ASU also saw an increase in its Hispanic enrollment. Hispanic enrollment reached 46.2% for the current fall semester, an all-time high, according to the release.
ASU's overall minority enrollment increased to 52.9% for the fall semester, which 5.5% Black enrollment and reaching more than 50% for the first time.
"That we were able to set another record for fall enrollment while also dealing with issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic is a testament to the tremendous work done by our entire faculty and staff. But what can’t be lost in the mix is the fact that we would not be attracting record numbers of students without the high-quality academic and student life programs that are the foundation of everything we do. Students know they will get a great education at ASU, so the Ram Family is still 10,000 strong and growing," ASU President, Ronnie Hawkins Jr., said in the release.
Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D. chancellor of the Texas Tech University System congratulated ASU's leadership, recruitment and retention teams for achieving this accomplishment.
The social work undergraduate degree program, the professional school counseling and the Master of Business Administration online graduated program are the academic areas that have seen the most growth compared to 2019.
Angelo State University set an enrollment goal in its "Vision 2020" to reach 10,000 students by 2020, and reached the goal three years early, in 2017.
