San Angelo ISD bands, orchestras awarded high honors at UIL contests

Bands and orchestras from various schools participated in sight-reading and concert competitions.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Several San Angelo Independent School District high school and junior high school bands and orchestras participated at recent UIL competitions, with some earning the highest honors.

According to an SAISD press release, the Lake View High School Band and Orchestra, High School Orchestra, as well as Glenn Middle School and Lee Middle School orchestras participated in the UIL Concert & Sigh-Reading competitions. The Lake View High School Mariachi competed in the UIL Solo-Ensemble contest.

The Lake View Honor Band and all four Central High School orchestras won Sweepstakes Awards at the UIL Region 6 Concert & Sight-Reading Contest.

The Sweepstake Award is the highest honor award and is achieved by earning a Division I (superior) rating in both concert and sight-reading.

The rating scale used in UIL music events ranges from Division I for superior performances to Division V (poor) where this is much room for improvement.

Students performed three prepared concert pieces during the concert portion and for the sight-reading portion, students performed a new piece they had not seen before.

The Lake View Chief's Band has earned the Sweepstakes Award three years in a row, while the 37th year for the Central High School Bobcat Orchestra.

The Lake View Band Program is under the direction of Josh Bailey, Jesse Bailey, Sarah Clark and Victoria Gonzalez, according to the release. 

Emilee Hall-Rocha and Mykel Martin direct the Central High School Orchestra.

The Lake View Orchestra, under the direction of Stephanie Infante, was rated as a Division 2 (excellent) rating in sight-reading.

“The amount of practice and dedication shown by our music directors and

students is more than impressive. I am very proud of their accomplishments," SAISD Director of Advanced Academics and Fine Arts, Tiffany Huebner, said.

Additionally, the Lake View High School Mariachi performed at the UIL Region 6 Solo-Ensemble contest and earned a Division I rating and advanced to the State Contest for the fifth consecutive year. 

Three of the 11 mariachi students selected for All-Regioni Mariachi are advancing to the area contest. 

Students advancing to the area contest are Amy Torrez, senior;  Alany Jimenez, senior and Jessie Martinez, junior. 

Glenn Middle School Varsity Chamber Orchestra earned the Sweepstakes Award by earning a Division I rating in the concert and sight-reading contests.

Lee Middle School 8th Grade Symphony Orchestra received a Division I rating in the sight-reading competition and a Divisi II rating in concert.

Glen Non-Varsity Honors Orchestra received a Division II rating in the sight-reading and concert competitions.

The district extends its congratulation to the band and orchestra members of each school. It commends teamwork to create music while exemplifying the attributes of the SAISD Learner Profile, the release said.
