MERKEL, Texas — Thunderstorms Tuesday night left the City of Merkel flooded. City officials closed many roads and performed over a handful of rescues according to Merkel Chief of Police.
"I've never had standing water in my drive way, ever,” Merkel resident, Todd Walters said.
He left his house at 5:20 Wednesday morning and came back to check on his home during his lunch break.
"I was expecting maybe the ditch to be full, but nothing like this,” Walters said.
His entire backyard was underwater, including his new septic system.
"I had to dig it all up, repair it and I mean it was just a couple weeks ago and all that dirt is still fresh so yeah, it’s completely underwater,” Walters said.
Other neighbors said their streets “looked like a river.”
Walters has been living on South 11th St. for many years. He said the six-foot ditch in his front yard is what mostly gets full, but never gets past it towards his house.
“I don't know how you can prepare for it...hopefully it won't rain that much in that little time again,” Walters said.
