Free access to breast and cervix care for west Texas women

The program is a grant for three years to help uninsured women receive free screenings.

ABILENE, Texas — The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women is partnered with the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas to provide a grant for uninsured west Texas women.

The Breast and Cervix Care for west Texas program is offering free mammograms (ages 40 years and up), pap smears (ages 21-64), and HVP vaccinations (ages 9-26).

"About 47 percent of this population in the area is uninsured…so that if there is a problem we can detect that problem early and they can get the help that they need, but it’s all about prevention and screening" Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center regional dean, Pearl Merritt.

The program is available for uninsured women in the following counties: Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Jones, Kent, Knox, Mitchell, Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shakelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Taylor and Throckmorton.

To qualify, one must have the following; a photo ID, proof of current address, and proof of income. Then, one must complete an application.

"Once I get the application and the documents, I'll qualify them on the spot and then I'll make them an appointment,” program lead specialist, Nancy Silva said.

The grant totals to over $2.4 million and is good for three years.

One can complete an application to make an appointment by visiting TTUHSC School of Nursing at 1674 Pine Street, Abilene, Tx. Call at (325) 696-0546, or email at Nancy.Silva@ttuhsc.edu.
