ABILENE, Texas — Although Freedom Festival organizers announced Thursday evening the decision to postpone the Fourth of July festival and concert until 2020, this year's fireworks show is still happening.

The decision to postpone the festival and concert was made because of the increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Abilene and Taylor County.

Mayor Anthony Williams said in a press release from the City of Abilene the Freedom Festival team made the decision to cancel the festivities in an effort to safeguard the health and economic welfare of the city.

Although the events scheduled Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center have been canceled, the 2020 WESTEX CONNECT Fireworks Spectacular at Nelson Park is still scheduled to take place at 10 p.m. from the Abilene Zoo Festival Gardens.

Social distancing in accordance to Gov. Greg Abbott's latest order will be required for those in attendance.
