How to spot fake gold in seconds

Reports of fake gold being sold in San Angelo are circling social media. So tonight, our Brenda Matute is showing us some quick tips on how you can spot fake jewelry at just a glance.

SAN ANGELO, TX — We saw a post on Facebook claiming that folks are going around selling fake gold and even attempting to sell it back to pawn shops.

I spoke to a local expert who gave me some easy tell-tale signs to show you that the jewelry you’re buying might not be real.

First, if you see the gold is fading into a lighter, darker or just different shade of metallic color its most likely fake.

Another easy way is to simply test it on a magnet. if it's fake it will stick to it. There's no such thing as magnetic gold or silver.

But also keep in mind the magnet test does not tell you if something is gold, it only tells you what is not gold.

To be sure when you’re making an expensive jewelry purchase you can take it to get acid tested at a local jewelry store.
