SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter appears to have announced on Facebook Monday that he plans to leave the position when his term is up in May of 2024, referring to himself as a "term limit guy" and expressing a desire to enjoy retirement.

Chief Carter was elected as San Angelo's police chief in July 2016. According to his biography on the department's website, he joined San Angelo's police force in 1992 and quickly rose through the ranks. He was promoted to Master Police chief in 1994, then Sergeant three years later, and then Lieutenant in 2007. The San Angelo Police Department offered no comment on Chief Carter's Facebook post.

In that same post, the chief also raised a question to the public: Should San Angelo's police chief be elected or appointed? Nearly 300 people answered the chief's question in the comment section. While people were split on the issue of election over appointment, most thanked Chief Carter for his leadership in San Angelo.
