BROWNWOOD, Texas — A 17-year-old was shot in the leg after he was attacked by several people when meeting a woman about a marijuana purchase, Brownwood Police said.

According to the Brownwood Police Department, at approximately 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, a 911 call about shots fired came in to the Communications Division of the Law Enforcement Center. The caller identified himself as the victim and said he was running away from several people near Bostick’s Automotive on Belle Plain. The caller told dispatch he was shot in the leg.

Officers arrived and found the caller, Christopher Lee Holland, 17, on Belle Plain. Holland had an obvious gunshot wound to his hip and leg. He was taken to Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood for treatment of injuries that the BPD said are not believed to be life-threatening.

Criminal Investigations Division investigators were contacted to open an investigation into the incident. Holland was interviewed and identified Jamal Deon Baker, 19, of Brownwood as the suspect. During the investigation, detectives were able to identify several other suspects and confirm the reasoning behind the shooting.

BPD said it is believed a female suspect, who knows both males, contacted Holland on the premise of purchasing marijuana. As Holland arrived at a home on Poplar Street, Baker and several others attacked him. Holland was able to run away from his attackers and was subsequently shot at by Baker. Several shots were fired with one striking Holland.

On Tuesday afternoon, Baker and several other suspects were found and interviewed. All those interviewed provided consistent accounts of the incident and admitted to the assault. The gun used in the assault was also found at a home in Bangs.

Baker was arrested at approximately 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected, the Brownwood Police Department said. No further information was made available.
