SAN ANGELO, Texas — Abbott Nutrition voluntarily recalled powdered infant formulas manufactured at the Surgis, Michigan facility. The formulas include Similac, Alimentum and Elecare.
The Food and Drug Administration along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local partners are investigating four customer complaints of infant illness.
Dr. Karyn Wulf, Abbott pediatrician and medical director of pediatrics, shared information about the recent recall.
“Cronobacter sakazakii was found to be present in this facility in a location not in contact with product. To date, no distributed product has tested positive for either the presence of Cronobacter sakazakii or Salmonella Newport,” Dr. Wulf said.
The FDA is advising consumers not to use the recalled formulas. Customers are able to check if their product is part of the recalled formula by checking the expiration date and lot number and entering the number into the website lot locator at Similacrecall.com
San Angelo WIC manager Cristina Eureste explained how this recall has affected parents.
“We’ve gotten really bombarded with phone calls with a lot of concerned parents,” Eureste said.
WIC released alternatives for all four types of Similac formulas recalled.
“We are asking clients not to discard the formula, we are asking them to take it back to the grocery store or call the manufacturer for a replacement,” Eureste said.
