ABILENE, TX — The Abilene Fire Dept. is allowing people interested in the job to get the full experience. They’re holding their first ever AFD Summer Program. People between the ages of 16 and 22 can apply for the free class. It will be held from July 30th to August 10th. It won’t be simply sitting in a classroom, but doing hands-on training like wearing bunker gear and crawling through small spaces. Staff said they hope this will result in more firefighters joining their team.
“We’ve seen a small decline in numbers during the application process probably due to the fact that we’ve had to hire so many new classes over the last few years because we’ve had a large group of firefighters that came on 20 to 30 years ago that are now retiring,” J Sanders said.
