Abilene fire investigators find illegal drugs while looking for cause of apartment fire

While investigating the fire, illegal drugs were found in an apartment next to the unit that was affected. Abilene Police have taken over the investigation.

ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Fire Department investigators found illegal narcotics while investigating the cause of an apartment fire Thursday morning.

According to a release from the AFD, at approximately 11:11 a.m. Thursday, crews responded to a residential structure fire on Mulberry Street. The home was been separated into two different living quarters.

Arriving crews found smoke showing and made a quick attack, extinguishing and containing it to the apartment where it started.

No one was at home in either apartment when the the fire happened.

During the initial fire investigation illegal narcotics were found in the unaffected apartment, the release said.

APD narcotics officers were notified and took over the investigation.

The American Red Cross was also called to help the four people displaced from the damaged apartment.

The fire was determined to be an accidental electrical fire caused by a space heater. The APD said estimated value of loss is $23,000.
