MITCHELL COUNTY, Texas — An Abilene man was killed Tuesday when the semitruck he was driving crashed, then fell off an overpass on Interstate 20 in Mitchell County.
The crash happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. Tuesday near milepost 216.
A preliminary crash report from the Texas Department of Public Safety said Kenith Wayne Herndon, 53, of Abilene was traveling west on I-20 in a semitruck, when it traveled south into the inside lane, then into the center median. The truck hit the inside westbound guardrail.
After hitting the guardrail, the truck continued on between the west and eastbound overpass and fell to the ground below sitting a column of the eastside overpass.
The truck then caught fire. It was towing a trailer with hydrochloric acid that DPS said leaked out of the cargo tank after the crash.
Herndon was pronounced dead at the scene.
