ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating a crash on the city's west side that left one man dead.

According to an APD press release, officers were called to a crash in 5300 block of South First Street at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

A 53-year-old Abilene man, identified as Jean Paul Zihalirwa, died as a result of injuries sustained in the two-vehicle crash.

Early investigation shows a Toyota Tacoma, driven by Skylar Karnas, 24, was traveling westbound on South First. Karnas was the sole occupant of the pickup truck.

A Honda Odyssey occupied by two people was also traveling west and attempting to turn left off the roadway towards the center median. The Tacoma hit the Honda on the driver’s side.

Next of kin notification has been made. Zihalirwa's passenger, Mbirembano Mwamini, and Karnas were both taken to the hospital by ambulance with injuries.

The APD said in the release alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
