ABILENE, Texas — In preparation for the Fourth of July weekend, the Abilene Police Department is anticipating a heavy call load.

According to an APD press release, each year this holiday sees a significant increase in the number of calls coming into APD dispatch relating to individuals setting off fireworks throughout the city.

Patrol officers will be designated to assist in responding to calls of fireworks. These officers may issue tickets and confiscate fireworks.

The APD is asking that citizens help by complying with the firework ordinance, which makes it illegal to set off fireworks in the city limits.

To assist in alleviating the number of calls to the emergency number, the department is asking citizens to use the fireworks line at 676-6598. Citizens will need to leave an address for patrol officers to respond.

The line will be operational from Friday through Monday.

All emergency calls should still be placed by dialing 9-1-1.
