ABILENE, Texas — After the school shooting at a Uvalde elementary school Tuesday that left 14 children and one teacher dead, the Abilene Police Department issued a statement saying it will be increasing its presence at both Abilene and Wylie ISDs through the end of the school year.
A release from the department said it is working with both Abilene and Wylie ISDs to provide more visibility of officers and school staff from Wednesday, May 25 through the end of the school year.
Although the department said there are currently no known threats in the Abilene area, it is working with school administrators to keep a close watch on Abilene schools.
"This is being coordinated as a proactive measure and as a visible deterrent. We are simply taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. We want parents and students to report any credible threat to your school resource officer and school administration or to the emergency number 9-1-1.
The Department extends condolences to the Uvalde community and to those families who lost loved ones because of this tragic and senseless incident. We hold them in our thoughts and prayers."
The Early Police Department said it would like to help ease the minds of parents in the Early ISD area. Early Police will have officers at each campus in the mornings and as the day ends. During the day, there will be officers going from campus to campus.
There are currently no known threats in the Early ISD area.
The department asks if anyone hears any type of a threat toward the schools to please call the Early Police Department at 325-646-5322 or dial 9-1-1.
