SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Abilene Zoo has lost one of the newest members of its family.

The zoo announced that baby giraffe Zahara died on the Wednesday after suffering a severe leg fracture. The cause of the injury is undetermined.

Zahara was born July 20, to parents Malaika and Congo, and "quickly captured the hearts of the zoo community and the public, who participated in voting for her name this summer," according to an Abilene press release.

"She was a precious member of our giraffe herd with her playful and spirited personality. Her growing bond with her family endeared her to all who met her. We know this news will be heartbreaking to the many who followed her journey from birth. “We are devastated by this tragic loss,” said Robert Trejo, General Curator. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers.” As we mourn the loss of Zahara, we are reminded of the challenges that come with the care of such magnificent animals. The zoo will continue to monitor the remaining members of the giraffe herd, ensuring their safety and health. We thank the public for their understanding during this difficult time and appreciate the outpouring of support for our team and the animals we care for."
