ABILENE, Texas — Malakia the giraffe is now a first time mother.
She gave birth to Abilene Zoo's newest giraffe on Aug. 12 and staff members discovered the baby on the morning of Aug. 13.
The gender of the calf is currently unknown, but the zoo says Malakia is adjusting well to her new motherhood role and they are going to closely monitor the baby over the next few days.
This is Abilene Zoo's second baby giraffe to be born in 2022, and there are now 10 giraffes total, which ties with the old record.
Ten or more giraffes is often referred to as a "tower," and the previous birth of Makena in June helped make this growing number possible.
The baby will be examined to determine its weight, height and gender in the coming days and the zoo is being "cautiously optimistic" about their newest addition.
